What causes a thumping noise in front? Tires are ok.

Cruise Control not keeping speed, 2000 Lesabre
My cruise control does not keep the speed very well. Going up a hill I will loose 5-10 km/hr, going down a hill, I will gain 5-10 km/hr, and even more.
